Western Sydney Smart Battery
Western Sydney Smart Battery
Situated in the growth corridor of Australia’s largest city, the Western Sydney Smart Battery WSSB is a 20MW/40MWh battery energy storage system development to be located adjacent to the Penrith Zone Substation.
The WSSB will connect to a strategic section of the Western Sydney medium voltage distribution network, and will be demonstrating an innovative power-as-a-service model. This model will not only provide power system and energy services, but will also provide network services by injecting power into the grid during times of critical peak demand.
The WSSB delivers on Firm Power’s mission to use innovative technology and solutions to power the energy transition. Firm Power successfully completed its development scope of the WSSB and effected a sale of the project in 2022.
DEVELOPMENT STATUS
The new investor is exploring opportunities with Endeavour Energy to add capacity to the project prior to construction commencing.
SITE
The project utilises vacant land within the Penrith’s zone substation. The site has been remediated by Endeavour Energy as part of the substation re-build a decade prior.
PLANNING
A development approval was granted by Penrith City Council in May 2021. Key stakeholders and community groups were consulted as part of the approval process.
GRID
An offer to connect has been issued for two 11kV connections for the projects 20MW capacity. In combination with Endeavour Energy, the new investor is looking to increase the connection capacity across higher voltage levels.
